Compound semiconductor (CS) technologies are set to play an even more important role in the shape of our future world. UK government policy is to make the UK a global technology leader and to ensure that future economic prosperity in the UK is derived from advanced technology, advanced manufacturing and innovation with global impact. In this one-day meeting we aim to map out the significant resources available to the compound semiconductor research and development community in the UK and raise visibility of the infrastructure, mechanisms and support available to create a world-class innovation pipeline; taking new research findings from the lab to manufacturing and commercialisation.

CSconnected and partners are presenting: IQE - CSC - ICS - CISM - CSA Catapult

Semiconductors underpin almost every major industry of the 21st century from cars to washing machines to entertainment systems and are fundamental to innovations such as quantum computing and artificial intelligence. The global semiconductors market value is expected to grow from $67bn today to $350bn in the next ten years. The global semiconductor shortage has led to a short supply of console, forced the delay of smartphone launches and is expected to wipe 100,000 cars off the UK’s total production for 2021. Manufacturers Intel and Dell anticipate that the shortage will last for several years with most manufacturing carried out by Taiwan’s TSMC and South Korea’s Samsung. The government’s Innovation Strategy identifies semiconductors, particularly chip design, as a notable British strength and notes a review into how public backing for the sector could augment UK technological capabilities. With the US committing $52bn in spending for domestic semiconductor manufacturing and research and the EU, China and Japan announcing measures to support their domestic industries, how can the industry be developed in the UK?
