From stone age to semiconductor age: the role of materials in advanced technologies
Human activity has been defined in terms of materials from the Stone Age through the bronze and iron ages.
During the last few decades, materials such as silicon have ushered in the digital age and now, next generation, atomically engineered materials comprising alloys of gallium, indium, nitrogen, arsenic, phosphorous and other elements are the enabling materials on which a whole host of new and emerging technologies are based.
This talk will look at the evolution of semiconductor materials, their impact on our lives to date and how the world may look in a future world of compound semiconductors.
