British Science Week 2022 | 11-20 MARCH 2022 | UK Wide | #BSW22

British Science Week is an annual celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths that features a range of fascinating, entertaining and engaging national, regional and local events across the UK. The campaign provides a platform to stimulate and support teachers, STEM professionals, science communicators and the general public to produce and participate in STEM events and activities across the UK.

The British Science Week 2022 is a ten-day celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths that will place between 11-20 March 2022! The theme of this year's British Science Week is growth and in association with the Welsh Government Office for Science, CSconnected are partaking in 'Filmed Talks for Schools'.

THE IMPACT OF THE SEMICONDUCTOR SHORTAGE: 7 FEBRUARY 2022 House of Commons, London, UK
Semiconductors underpin almost every major industry of the 21^st century from cars to washing machines to entertainment systems and are fundamental to innovations such as quantum computing and artificial intelligence. The global semiconductors market value is expected to grow from $67bn today to $350bn in the next ten years. The global semiconductor shortage has led to a short supply of console, forced the delay of smartphone launches and is expected to wipe 100,000 cars off the UK’s total production for 2021. Manufacturers Intel and Dell anticipate that the shortage will last for several years with most manufacturing carried out by Taiwan’s TSMC and South Korea’s Samsung. The government’s Innovation Strategy identifies semiconductors, particularly chip design, as a notable British strength and notes a review into how public backing for the sector could augment UK technological capabilities. With the US committing $52bn in spending for domestic semiconductor manufacturing and research and the EU, China and Japan announcing measures to support their domestic industries, how can the industry be developed in the UK?

Following the UK’s departure from the EU, the continued close economic ties between Baden-Württemberg and British companies must be made fit for the future. Photonics for Net Zero
CSconnected, KTN, Photonics Leadership Group, Welsh Government, Photonics Scotland and Photonics Connected have teamed up to host an open innovation workshop on 22nd September, where leading organisations will be sharing some of the urgent Net Zero challenges that Photonics can address, followed by breakout discussions to consider potential projects themes and solutions that can be taken forward. It is envisaged that the outputs of this interactive workshop will be shared as part of representations to the Comprehensive Spending Review 2021.
