CSconnected presents: Day of Photonics

21st October 2021

21 OCTOBER 2021 - DAY OF PHOTONICS

You may not have heard of photonics but you are certain to use technology that depends on the combination of light (photons) and electronics from which the term photonics is derived.

Any electronic gadget that uses or emits light is a photonics enabled device. Obvious examples are LED lights, phone, TV and computer screens, cameras and sensors. Perhaps less obvious applications include lasers and receivers used to transmit data along optical fibres, medical sensors for healthcare technologies and infrared remote controls.

Photonics is an increasingly important area of technology in which compound semiconductors play a critical role.

CSconnected represents the home of the compound semiconductor community in Wales where we are proud to shine a light on photonics.

For more information on photonics, read our new article “Photonics 101” at csconnected.com.

About Day of Photonics

Day of Photonics is an annual event that promotes “photonics” towards the general public. Companies, research organizations, and organisations involved in photonics reach out to their communities to raise awareness about what is photonics and why it is important, and promote the role of their organization in the photonics ecosystem and value chain.

About CSconnected

CSconnected represents the world's first compound semiconductor community based in and around South Wales in the UK. The CSconnected community integrates world-class research excellence, innovation and prototyping facilities with a unique regional supply chain in compound semiconductor manufacturing. In 2020, CSconnected received government funding provided through UK Research and Innovation’s flagship Strength in Places Fund (SIPF). CSconnected SIPF is a 55-month project with a total value of £43 million, supported by £25 million of government funding provided through UK Research and Innovation’s flagship Strength in Places Fund.
